Речи 4 июля: Шекспир в формировании американского национального самосознания

Становление американцев как нации и увлечение Шекспиром в США оказываются тесно переплетенными процессами, взаимодействие которых автор анализирует на материале речей 4 июля. Он показывает, что в период активного англо- американского противостояния в первой половине XIX в. тексты английского классика использовались для консолидации патриотических чувств и укрепления антианглийских настроений, ставших основой американского национализма. Во второй половине XIX в. драматург был задействован в популяризации теории англосаксонизма. Его имя связывается с идеей свободы, что позволило игнорировать принадлежность Шекспира к английской нации и сделать его полноправным достоянием американской культуры.
