Междисциплинарность представляет собой важную перспективу для лингвистов, стремящихся к взаимодействию с другими отраслями науки и к более широкому взгляду на язык. Методы могут заимствоваться из антропологии, когнитивной и компьютерной науки, социологии и т. д. Типологическое направление усиливает понимание общих и особенных свойств языка.
